None of the cameras have yet reached their first destination, yet there's already surprising news! My friend Guy who I have wrote about in the first entry, who was lost for three and a half weeks in southern Argentina was found yesterday!! He is alive and in good health, weighing 12 kilos less, exhausted and happy. There is little information known, but apparently he and an Austrian friend got lost trying to follow a beaten path and tried to track back for about 2 weeks. At that point (which is just about when the idea of these letters started) they decided to conserve energy and camped next to a stream living off the clams, berries and mushrooms in the near by area. Yesterday a helicopter noticed their SOS sign and rescued them. He will have plenty of stories to tell when he gets out of the hospital. We will be able show him the pictures that come out of this letter expedition of ours indeed, just as I wished it would be!

Camera3 is ready.
Amrita, who shares the office with Helgi and I wanted to send this one to her cousin Raja from India. She said he would take it seriously and send it on promptly. At first I wanted to send it to a friend of mine but Amrita was so excited and I figured it's good to take other people's suggestions at times. Personally I know nothing about Raja, except that he lives in Calcutta and that his cousin respects him a lot. After visiting Amrita and her family last weekend maybe I can say I know a little more about his culture, but that's about it.
So Raja, I hope you accept this strange letter. It's in your hands now.

Camera2 is a go!
Helgi preferred that his younger sister gets this one. I don't know much about her. She looks very pretty in the pictures and I heard that she was appearing in some ads. Fanney Sisi is the only one we have decided about before this whole thing came to life. I think we mentioned her in the opening post.
So Fanney Sisi - go have fun with this new game.

Camera1 is on its way.
From Ithaca, NY in the USA it was put in an envelope to my friend eels who once surprised me with an intriguing email. She lives in Israel and I met her for the first time this summer. If I could, than I would kiss her on the mouth. But I don't think that she would like it so a letter will be enough. Actually I write her pretty often, but that's another story. I think she'll like this letter mainly because she likes unorthodox surprises. I can't wait to hear that she got it and mark a new dot on the map above.
So hear, hear! to One out of Three.

This morning I had this idea to send a letter with a camera to be passed around the world. At Gimme! Coffee Helgi had the idea to make 3 of them. So we built this site to accompany the letters.

All the letters will be equipped with a disposable camera I got about an hour ago. Each one will have it's own characteristics. We're not 100% sure where we'll send them all to. One will probably get to Helgi's sister Fanney Sisi in Iceland. We'll send them tomorrow.

Helgi thinks every addressee will take about 5 pictures, I thought 2, so I guess anywhere in between is fine. The thing is, the less photos people take, the more places the letters can get. But then you want pictures to be interesting and stuff and you never know with these crappy cameras, probably half the pictures won't come out. Yes, it's a cheap type.

In general, people who will get the package will find a login and password and will be able to add entries telling us how they felt getting a letter and who they are sending it to. Or whatever else they want to write.
Personally I had butterflies in my belly all day thinking about this thing. On the other hand I am afraid it will die before it comes back to us and that we'll never get to develop the pictures. If it does get here in the end you can bet they'll all be posted.

I want to mention a few of the things I had in mind when coming up with the idea.
one: my friend Guy disappeareded in Terra Del Fuego a few weeks ago. He was going to climb a glacier and hadn't returned. His family is gathering money to send an expedition to locate him. I hope it works. I want to show him the pictures you guys (and dolls) are taking.
two: a few days ago I broke up with my girlfriend. She too has a thing with letters. She sends herself camera obscura boxes. Things that come out are freaky and neat. This is of course influenced by her mind. But if this is a dedication than I would like to dedicate it to all my ex-girlfriends. Love doesn't die.
three: Helgi and I watch a lot of Invader Zim (the cartoon). Fun is an important aspect of life. My favorite character is Gir, who is stupid and happy. These letters are stupid and happy too. The letters will travel around the world, I wish they meet interesting people beyond borders.

TRAVELING LETTER

initially 3 packages including a disposable camera are sent to 3 different people around the world. They will be asked to take pictures and send it on. This is the place to check what's up with the travelling letters
